There’s something so special about photographing a family as their children get older. The little moments change, personalities grow, and before you know it, the kids who once needed to be carried are running ahead, making each other laugh and creating their own memories together.
For this Calgary family session, we headed to the ridge in McKenzie Lake, where the elevated views look out toward the Bow River and surrounding Alberta landscape. It was the perfect setting for a relaxed evening of family portraits with Mom, Dad, and their three boys.
A Relaxed Calgary Family Photography Session
Rather than keeping everyone posed and looking at the camera for the entire session, we let the boys move, play and interact with one another. Some of my favourite images from this session came from the moments in between—the hugs, laughter, playful teasing and the way these three brothers naturally interact.
The open landscape also gave us plenty of variety without needing to travel between multiple locations. We photographed the family together, individual relationships between parents and their boys, and plenty of candid moments that show their personalities.
Family Photography in Southeast Calgary
One of the things I love about photographing families in Calgary is that beautiful locations don't always require a long drive into the mountains. The landscape around McKenzie Lake and southeast Calgary offers beautiful prairie views, rolling grasses and wide-open skies that can create a distinctly Alberta feel.
